Being Too Picky

We get it. This is going to be your home, and you want it to look exactly like the one in your dreams. Unfortunately, this is incredibly rare. You are going to have to make some concessions here or there because nothing is ever perfect. First-time homebuyers can often be petty when looking to buy a home. We like to refer to it as “Searching for the Unicorn.” Oftentimes, what they don’t like about a listing can be changed with some home renovation projects once it is yours. Don’t let the color of the walls or the design of the kitchen throw you off. This can easily be changed later on.

Fixating On the House

Obviously, the house is the most important thing that you are looking at when looking to buy a home, but you must consider other details as well. Don’t only fixate on the house. The neighborhood in which it is in is incredibly important too. Will your children (if you have them) have neighbor friends to play with? Is there an area that you can bring your dog on a walk? What will your commute be like to and from work? All of these questions and more are so important to the home buying process. Make sure that you consider the neighborhood, location, etc. before making a decision to purchase it. You don’t want to have any regrets after making such an important decision.

Ignoring Your Budget

Always, and we mean always, keep your budget in mind. You’re going to need money after the purchase, right? Too many times people looking to buy a home fail to consider payments that they are going to need to make after buying the house and suddenly find themselves struggling financially. Also, don’t fall in love with a home that is out of your budget range. In fact, avoid even looking at any listings that you can not afford. We all want to live in the castle, but unfortunately, not all of us can afford it.

Trying to Do It Alone

One big mistake that homebuyers make is assuming that they will save money if they do everything on their own and not get the help of a professional real estate agent. The real estate industry is incredibly complex and competitive, and without having the proper knowledge of how everything looks or which steps to take, you are putting yourself at risk of buying the wrong house, paying too much for it, not considering the details such as repairs, and more. Don’t worry. Unlike other real estate companies, we are not in it for just the paycheck. We truly care about helping our clients find the perfect home at the best price and will use our expertise and determination to make that happen.

Not Thinking of the Future

Life is a wild ride. You could plan everything in your life and the path that you expect it to take can be thrown an absolute curveball. One devastating mistake that we have seen people make is not preparing for the future. A couple could swear up and down that they will never have children and then boom! Surprise, it’s a boy! And then they find themselves living in a home that is not big enough for their growing family and must go through the process all over again. Even if you don’t expect children or taking a loved one into your home, keep it in the back of your mind that you might want a little bit of extra space just in case.

While there are many more mistakes that first-time homebuyers make, these are some of the biggest. Fortunately, when you have us on your side, we will make sure to give you the guidance and advice that you need in order to avoid these errors.
